Basic concepts

CO2 is partly responsible for the natural greenhouse effect, which is essential for temperatures that provide a life-sustaining environment on earth. With the increasing generation of energy as a result of industrialisation and the increase in transport, the proportion of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere has also increased.

According to climate researchers, this is accelerating global warming and climate change. Scientists and politicians have responded by introducing the so-called 2-degree goal: this agreement aims to cut CO2 emissions by half by 2050 and thus limit the global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius. Germany even wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent relative to 1990.
