With coal-fired power plants that used gasification, the coal is not directly burnt but is first of all converted into flammable gas. This gas can then be used in combined cycle power plants for generating electricity. This technology is known as IGCC (Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle). This process can also be used for capturing CO2, whereby it is known as pre-combustion capture, since it occurs prior to the combustion process.
